5 ways to build a sustainable wardrobe without spending more

Category: Style

Sustainable fashion has a branding problem. People hear sustainable and think expensive organic cotton tees or designer resale at barely-below-retail prices. But the most sustainable thing you can do is keep existing clothes in use. And that does not have to cost more — it can actually save you money.

1. Buy preloved instead of new. This is the obvious one, but the savings are real. The same brands you would pay full price for — Love Bonito, Zara, Uniqlo, Charles and Keith — show up on Refit at 50-80% off retail. Same quality, fraction of the price.

2. Rent for one-off occasions. That outfit for a wedding, a gala, or a holiday? You will probably wear it once. Renting costs a fraction of buying, and you do not end up with another piece gathering dust in your closet.

3. Swap instead of shopping. Got something you are bored of but it is still in great condition? Swap it for something new-to-you, for free. No money changes hands — just clothes finding new homes.

4. Sell what you do not wear. If it has been sitting unworn for 6+ months, someone else will love it. Listing takes under 2 minutes on Refit, and you earn money from clothes that were just taking up space.

5. Quality over quantity. When you do buy new, invest in pieces that last. But for trend pieces, seasonal items, or things you want to try — preloved is almost always the smarter choice.
